Mary the Queen
Published in Unknown Binding by Hutchinson ()
Author: Hilda Winifred Lewis
Average review score:

2nd book in a set of 3 excellent historical novels
This book picks up where the first book in this trilogy "I am Mary Tudor" finishes. It covers the years from her accession to the Throne, to her marriage to Phillip of Spain and her first "pregnancy" and finishes when she is expecting her first child.

These are excellent very "realistic" novels. They really bring home how much of international diplomacy etc hang on trifles like 'precedence'and imagined slights to honour. The author has obviously put a great deal of research into these books and for me they have been as good as a well written "real aka academic" biography. Now I've just got to find a copy of the 3rd book "bloody Mary" to finish the story.

This is a highly reccomended, though almost forgotten, historical novels author.

The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony and Healing
Published in Hardcover by University of Nebraska Press (June, 1990)
Author: Thomas H. Lewis
Average review score:

Excellent, recommended for Native American studies.
Lewis a psychiatrist and medical anthropologist who stayed at the Pine Ridge Res in the late 60's and early 70's. From the book: "...he describes the Indian Healers - their techniques, personal histories and qualities, the problems addressed and the results obtained" . This is an excellent book for Native American studies, those interested in non AMA healing techniques and also should be required reading for all med students.

MEN OF IDEAS
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (July, 1997)
Author: Lewis Coser
Average review score:

The Real Idea Men
They just don't write intellectual histories like this anymore. Coser's prose is lucid, his research deep and compelling. I have to admit I read this book in one great gulp. As I did, I felt random insights gained in other books into the rise of the modern intellectual begin to fall into place under the gentle pressure of Coser's narrative.

For instance, the concomitant rise of the English coffeehouse and the rise of the intellectual in that newly formed public space. Habermas points to this innovation as the basis for his notion of the public sphere. Prior to the public coffeehouse Coser points out, intellectuals had very little opportunity to meet, to talk, to argue, to pursue their particular interests with others in a free and unpoliced space. Modern coffeehouse franchise trades on this legacy; of course, but only superficially. The original coffeehouses in London each had their own character, their own clientele, their own subject matter. And people talked, they held forth, they created public opinion. I don't hear much public opinion being expressed in today's expresso parlors. In fact, I suspect a real political discussion would be considered out of bounds. His discussion of the "Brain Trust" in the FDR adminsistration is compelling, too -- the point at which intellectuals were at last let into the center of American power.

Taken in tandem with "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life" by Richard Hofstadter, Coser and Hofstader tell a fascinating story of the rise of the intellectual and the resistance they have encountered and continue to encounter.

Check out the list provided by Plaegius shown on this page -- I've read three of them so far, and have been very pleased so far!

Mere Christianity/The Screwtape Letters (Collector's Box Set)
Published in Hardcover by Harper SanFrancisco (23 October, 2001)
Author: C. S. Lewis
Average review score:

My new favorite book - Mere Christianity
C.S. Lewis has a great talent of taking complicated subjects and making them so simple that you almost think yourself stupid. Lewis shows a clear picture of what christians really believe in this book, and with fitting analogies and profound applications, he shows how being a christian doesn't have to be a giant leap of faith into the dark, but can be a firm choice in believing that what the Bible says is factual. (Just like believing a witness in court is telling the truth) Lewis takes on subjects ranging from christian morals and why they are so important for christians to explaining the concept of the Trinity of God (yikes! Heavy subject!). Whether you're a Christian who would like to see the reinforcing explanation of the faith, or anyone else who would like an insight into "mere" christianity, this book is definately for you.

Mere Christianity: An Anniversary Edition of the Three Books

Authors: C. S. Lewis and Walter Hooper
Average review score:

A classic!
This is one of C.S. Lewis' crowning achievements. Well-reasoned and insightful, well presented, readable, well grounded. This book will change some minds. Highly recommend to anyone interested in defending their Christian faith or reading a well reasoned logical approach to christianity.

Metapunctuation (Entrepid Linguistic Library)
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (November, 1993)
Author: Lewis Burke Frumkes
Average review score:

Our e-mail is woefully lacking in punctuations
I read this book years ago and I loved it. I have apparently lost my copy, so I am ordering another one.

I teach information systems. One of the things I tell my students is to be VERY careful of what they say in e-mail. For, although I am not sure of love and taxes, I do know that email is forever.

I tell my students that e-mail is 'disembodied text'. We are sorely lacking in the punctuation to fully express ourselves. I have many more feelings than '?' and '!'.

How many times have our e-mails been misconstrued because the reader did not get the irony, or cynicism, or joking intent of our message?

Now enter METAPUNCTUATION!!! with many more symbols to more fully express ourselves.

But our ASCII character set, with just 256 possible characters, does not have room for more characters. And therein lies the problem. We must first adopt to the unicode character set (which supports over 65,000 different characters), before we can create new punctuation symbols. And boy do I have some ideas about new characters.

Ohhh, about this book. It is VERY funny. And you will learn just how lacking our character set is for fully expressing ourselves.

Keep that in mind when you write you next e-mail.

Micro-art; art images in a hidden world
Published in Unknown Binding by Harry N. Abrams, Incorporated ()
Author: Lewis R. Wolberg
Average review score:

If you love looking at photomicroscopy, this is a classic.
If you're as obcessed as I am, you definately want to save up your money and buy this. absolutely stunning photos, with a few diatoms, although not near as many as I wish. The only drawback is that it has been out of print for a very long time. Combine that with tipped-in photos, and they start peeling off. buy it cheap but decent like I did if you actually want to enjoy it, because if you get an expensive copy you will probably feel like you shouldn't touch it too much. I think it's time to call for another printing!

Mind Set
Published in Paperback by Brownell & Carroll (January, 1995)
Authors: Fred J. Kruger and Lynne E. Lewis
Average review score:

Entertaining exploration of situational ethics & murder.
This is a fascinating exploration of what humans are capable of under duress. An extortion attempt on an "innocent" victim goes horribly wrong for the perpetrators. Who is the victim is a constant question. An examination of situational ethics by the victim, the victim's family, and the police keep the reader in suspense as to the outcome. DO you really know what you or your spouse is capable of when pushed hard enough?
